Sir Robin Knox-Johnston restores famous yacht Suhaili he sailed

After a three-year labour of love, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, LYC President, has restored the yacht he sailed around the world in nearly 50 years ago.

The famous sailor completed the solo non-stop mission around the globe in 1968, arriving 20 days ahead of his closest competitor, Frenchman Bernard Moitessier.

Now, 48 years later, the 77-year-old has relaunched the 32ft boat, named Suhaili, at Gosport Premier Marina, in Hampshire, after a three-year renovation.

Sir Robin, who lives in Portsmouth, said: "She is part of my life. If I did nothing, she would fall to pieces.

"I wanted to get her commissioned so I could use her again for sailing. Although she won't be used for racing, I can take her out in the Solent.

"Suhaili has her place in history as the first boat to go non-stop around the world apart from a submarine.

"The boat is in the history books and I wanted to see her restored to those days."
